Will The Playstation Save It's Maker?
After Sony said that they would be cutting jobs, Katsuhiko Mori, fund manager at Daiwa SB Investments, said in an interview with the BBC: "Sony doesn't have any core businesses that generate stable profits". But will the Playstation 3 console be able to help Sony?
Even though, some people may point out that ever since the Playstation 3 release in 2006, the console hasn't been making a profit. This is because of the simple fact that Sony are selling the consoles for less than it costs to make them. And it's been that way since the consoles release back in 2006. Sony dropped the price on purpose so that they could break into the market at the time.
Although this may seem rather odd, Sony have used this tactic every time they release a console, even though the competition was tough, the did it with the Playstation 3.
Their plan is that they release a high spec console at a loss which will last for many years and eventually turn them in a profit. But can it work this time? With the high pressure competition of the Xbox 360 and the new market of Nintendo Wii, will Sony manage to make enough profit to cover their losses?
The problem is that the price of the Playstation 3 will not start going down until Sony begin to make a decent profit. But as the consoles price currently is alot higher than the other consoles on the market, they won't get a huge proportion of the console sales, which will cause them to loose money for longer.
Although all that sounds a bit bleak for Sony, there is one upside that they have, Blu-ray. It was lucky for Sony that Blu-ray came out on top of the DVD battle. If HD DVD had won the battle, it would have not given the Playstation 3 any edge over it's competition.
So, at the moment, it's not looking good for Sony, also, with their release of their new online community, Playstation Home, already being shot down by Microsoft and EA. Both of them have said that their latest attempt at creating a social community is outdated and not directed.
Senior manager at Xbox 360 game console division, Aaron Greenberg, said: "When they unveiled it, it seemed innovative. I think what's happened is now here we are a couple of years later and we feel beyond that. It feels like 2005 tech in 2008.".
Trip Hawkins said: "I can't tell if they're going towards this mass market idea...or if they're being lured into essentially trying to compete with Warcraft or Second Life".
After Sony spent alot of time, money and effort on their new social community, it has just been shot down, personally, it just seems like an idea of earning money, there are several things within the world that requires money to buy, and they also have sections of the world which are sponsored by different companies like Red Bull. I'm sure most gamers will hate the idea of being spammed with adverts as they walk around.
Overall, it's not looking good for Sony, they are relying on a Playstation 3 that is over priced to the consumer and under priced to the makers. Who knows where Sony will be if their console doesn't start to sell more.

Can anyone tell the difference between blu ray and a dvd when played through a playstation 3?
Can anyone actually tell the difference in picture quality between a blu ray and dvd when played through a ps3? Yes, my tv's are 1080p. Are blu rays just a waste of money? From what I understand the ps3 upconverts regular dvd's. Thanks
There is a huge difference between blu-ray and dvd when played on a 1080P TV. Blu-ray has 6 times the resolution of DVD, meaning DVD has to be blown up 6 times to fill the same 1080P screen. That results in an image with noticeable pixelization and blurriness, especially compared to blu-ray. All upconverting does is resize the DVD image to fit a 1080P screen, it doesn't add any detail or increase the resolution of the image at all.
