How do I print in B&W with my HP Photosmart C3100 when the color cartridge is empty?

When I turn on the printer, a screen pops up on the computer that says the color cartridge is empty and needs to be replaced. Specifically:

In addition to this error message, two lights on the printer flash. The "Color" button flashes on-off-on-off repeatedly without stopping. The orange light at the top of the button panel flashes in sync with the "Color" button.

I open up an application to print (e.g. Firefox), and tell it to print in Grayscale, with black ink only. Then I hit print, and nothing prints. This was working fine a few days ago, and I always print in B&W only, so I'm certain the color cartridge is not empty, though it may have dried up.

Any ideas on how I can tell the printer to print in B&W even without the color cartridge?

Unfortunately, there is no override or bypass function for cartridges that need replacing on this model printer. You'll need to replace the color ink cartridge before the printer will be able to print, even it it's only in black and white. This is a design of the manufacturer.

Though the cartridges did print OK previously, there was probably just enough ink last time. Every time the printer starts up it runs through a quick cycle and uses a little ink to prime and ready the printheads to make sure they're ready. Of course that may have used up what little ink was left in one of the colors and why now it says it needs to be replaced.

You'll need to replace the color ink cartridge in order to continue using the printer in any capacity.
