S.M.A.R.T. status-bad,what is that mean?

After i turn on PC and bios screen loads there is a message:hard disk S.M.A.R.T.status-bad,backup and replace.I'm having a problem because i can't install windows xp on c partition,co i run it on E,because when i was having it on C windows crashed and refused to start and i couldn't recover it with original installation cd.I tryed to repare the C partition ucing hiren's boot cd,but it just found lot of bad sectors and it cant recover them.Can i do something to fix hdd or i must buy new one?
Hard disk model is Maxtor 6l080l0 80gb.

Buy a new one.
