Questions You Might Want To Ask A Restaurant POS Expert
How Many Restaurant POS Stations Will I Be Needing?
- Considering peak customer volume
When handling peak customer volume, you need to have a plan to be able to efficiently serve them all. - Number of employees taking the orders
In a table service environment we suggest 1 station per 3-5 servers. You may want to add extra stations for handling high volume areas such as the bar and cashie stations. When switching to a POS system from a cash register many people tend to forget that their POS system is not only used to to cash out customers but can be used for order entry as well. - Restaurant layout
A proper restaurant layout affects your employees service. So if you have a bar, assigning a separate station for your bar tender would be easier since he can serve customers from there quickly. - Assigning stations effectively where customers pay for their meals
If you want your customers to pay for their meals though your servers carrying their own banks, then I suggest assigning fewer servers per station. But if you want them to pay at front, having one or two dedicated cashier stations would be better for speedy transactions.
What type of POS computer should I use for my business?
- Desktop: standard desktop computers.
- Least expensive computer option
- Has onsite warranty for 3 years
- take more span but can easily be positioned so it can't cause any hassle for your paying customers
- Flexible enough for adding extra ports
- Latest CPU speeds and memory
- Screen and computer are separate; if ever technical problems accur, it'll be isolated.
- Small form factor (SFF): smaller than desktops.
- More stylish than the desktop
- Has 3 years standard onsite warranty
- More Space Saving
- Fewer options for expandability
- Latest CPU speeds and memory
- Screen and computer are separate; in case of technical problems problems are isolated.
- All-in-one terminals: combining touchscreen and computer.
- More efficient because it requires fewer wires least space, even more stylish
- Manufacturers warranty: 1-2 years (Not onsite)
- Comes standard with sufficient ports for almost any operation
- CPU speed is generally slower than the other two options but sufficient for the Point of Sale needs.
- Screen and computer are combined
How many cash drawers?
- Your servers may carry their own cash banks, but it is still advisable that you have a cash drawer to stations where you want to end transactions.
Should I consider having integrated debit cards?
- Your POS systems can be used to process and keep records of all credit card transactions and allows you to store them in one convenient location.
- With the advance of high speed internet transactions processing time can reduced to 3-4 seconds per transaction.
- If high speed internet is not available we suggest using a standalone terminal for processing.
How many kitchen/bar printers?
- One printer for your kitchen will probably be sufficient for most restaurants; however, if you have different sections in your kitchen handling different dishes you may want a printer for each section.
- Consider this, appetizers can be printed on one printer and have all your main dish printed on another.
- When choosing for printers to use for your kitchen and bar, use impact (dot-matrix) printers instead of thermal printers. Why? Because tickets that are printed on thermal printers becomes unreadable when exposed to heat, and the loud printing of impact printers can alert your cooks and bartenders that an order is coming through.
Do I need more that one receipt printer?
- Having a receipt printer at every station would be better than just having one.
Does having a back office computer helps in restaurant management?
- A back office computer helps managers to run reports and access POS systems to change, remove or add important data without disturbing servers.
- It's not quite necessary to have a back office computer for your restaurant, if you have less than 4 stations.. But if you do, it's always a great idea that you host your database on a back office computer when you have 4 or more stations so none of them has extra load of running the database.

Power Supply Outside Of Case?
I'm waiting on my new computer to come, but it's going to be a while so I was wondering if it will hurt anything to leave a power supply unit outside the case. The current computer's small form factor power supply went out so I was was going to hook up an ATX PSU and leave the PSU outside the case because it's too large to fit inside. This got me wondering though, if an ATX psu will even plug into a motherboard used inside of a SFF case. Im not quite sure what form factor the motherboard is >.<
Thanks ![]()
Thanks for the help people, I didn't see a problem with it but I wanted to make sure. I wish I could rate all your answers as best.
Nothing is more disconcerting than to build a complete computer and then find something doesn't work..and have to disassemble it! I use a "test stand" to work on all the components LONG before they ever go into the case! So yes you can safely use a PSU outside of a case...I do it all the time! Just make sure you don't put it in a place were it can be knocked over or block any air vents/fans and keep unused connectors from getting into harms way.
