Problem or Not? We take a responsible look at Computer Game Addiction
Several surveys have found that video games in the home often help with family bonding. In surveys, parents also cite other benefits for their offspring through computer gaming, including improved hand-eye co-ordination and manual dexterity, improved memory and recall, opportunities for learning and cognitive exercise, stress relief and relaxation and confidence-building Any Nintendo Wii-owning families can add a comprehensive physical workout to that list!
According to his research, author of several in-depth studies into online gaming and gambling addiction Psychologist Professor Mark Griffiths, has stated that for the majority of gamers, excessive playing is not a problem.
He did say however that: "It does seem to be the case that online gaming addiction for a small minority is a real phenomenon and people suffer the same symptoms as traditional addictions." {"But the good news is that it is a small minority."}
Professor Griffiths adds that "MMORPGs - Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games - are the types of games that completely engross the player. They are not games that you can play for 20 minutes and stop. He also tagged on: "If you are going to take it seriously, you have to spend time doing it."
In one detailed survey of 540 gamers, Professor Griffith and his team found that there were four - less than 0.75% - playing more than 80 hours a week, 80 hours being considered "excessive". OK, so do you need to be concerned about addiction? "Healthy enthusiasm" or "unhealthy addiction?" People who sacrifice jobs, partners and loved ones are considered "extreme players" warns Professor Griffiths.
Professor Griffiths advice was that if concerned about gaming addiction, ask for a referral by your doctor to a psychologist.
Computer game addiction can be defined as "excessive or compulsive use of computer and video games that interferes with daily life". Compulsive computer gaming is now generally recognized as a condition to watch for and if necessary to treat. However, it is by no means a doom and gloom scenario and there is much to be positive about as detailed earlier and in the final part of this article to follow.
This is one of a trilogy of concise articles dealing with the issue of Computer Games Addiction. The articles have been researched and written by a site dedicated to Video and Online Gaming and seek to present a balanced and responsible view of Gaming Addiction.
